Due to unrestricted rice imports, some farmers are forced to sell their harvest at P7 just to compete with imported rice, much lower than the cost to produce it at over P12.

But did you know that you can help farmers and earn at the same time? It is through crowdfunding.

According to the Department of Trade and Industry, Agriculture has 7.3% share in Philippine GDP in 2018.

It’s really sad knowing that we are an agriculture country but we are still among the top rice importers in the world.

I came from a family of farmers and it’s my parent’s main source of income.

It’s also one of the main reason why I and my siblings were able to finish college.

However, if we depend on that alone, graduating from college might just be a dream for us. However, I still believe that there is still some hope in Philippine Agriculture.

Two years ago, I discovered that I can earn from agriculture while helping local farmers at the same time. Until now, it’s giving me a passive source of income.

These are the three companies that can help you earn money without going into the process of tilling the soil.

Farmon.ph

FarmOn.ph is a crowdfunding community where people can help farmers on their financial needs and at the same time reap rewards for their contributions. It was established in 2014 and currently owns 96 hectares of farmland property located in Isabela and Quirino Province

It is a crowdfunding community wherein investors (farmoner) select which crops (such as papaya, petsay, string beans, legumes, varieties of pepper and others) or livestock (such as pigs, goats, ducks, and chickens) they will choose to invest in a particular cycle. Once the company harvest and sold their products, you will get a profit from it.

You can invest for as low as 1,500 to 9,000 per plot. The maximum investment per cycle is P300,000. They accept contributions once the cycle opens which is usually announced on their Official Facebook page and their website.

Cropital

It is also a crowdfunding platform that is a globally recognized organization whose development is being supported by institutions in the U.S.A, Netherlands, Malaysia, and the Philippines. It is a social enterprise providing farmers access to scalable and sustainable financing.

Use cases and historical statistical data show rates of returns for users, ranging from 3% to 30% in less than 6 months. Their minimum investment per farm is P5,000 and maximum investment per farm is P15,000.

They also announced whenever they are open for investment through email but you can register on their website anytime.

DV Boer Farm

Established in 2014, Situated in Balibago Lian Batangas and occupies an eleven hectare of land. They also have sub farms located all over the country. DV Boer farm is a breeding haven of full-blood boer goats directly imported from Australia.

Their minimum investment for their Paiwi is P10,000 to P1,060,000.

Final Thoughts

Investing in farms just like other forms of investment still has some risk involved.

Risks arise from adverse weather conditions such as drought or excessive rainfall at harvest or planting.

Putting your eggs in one basket is still not advisable. We also have to keep in mind that we need to have an emergency fund and life insurance before investing.

Some of you might think it is impossible to save 100,000 pesos for a minimum wage earner or for someone earning 15,000-20,000 pesos a month. Don’t worry, I also have that same thinking when I was in a corporate job.

The truth is, it’s very possible. I remember hitting that 100,000 pesos goal at the age of 22, it was six days after my birthday. It might not sound so impressive for some but for me it was a big achievement knowing that I am only earning 20,000 pesos a month, renting an apartment in Manila, commuting to work and providing financial support to my family.

I am only earning 16,000 a month from my first job. However, it feels like a really big amount for me since I have not earned that kind of money in my entire life. I know I will be able to save a lot of money and things will work out well for me but it didn’t. It’s been six months working in a corporate world and I can say, I’m totally broke. I even had days trying to withdraw fifty pesos from my debit card, desperately broke.

One day, I realized I should not live a life like this. I feel like I’m worse than my 15-year-old self. I look for ways on how I can grow my money. I found an online brokerage company and start my first investment in the stock market. Starting at that time, I learn a lot of things in saving and investing money. I know you can do it too.

Related Topic: How Did I Start a Business at the Age of 15 and How Can You Do It Too

Set a goal. We should always begin with the end in mind. The starting capital in the stock market used to be 5,000 pesos and for me to start, I had to save that amount. I did it in three months. Looking at my money grow by itself gives me discipline in saving money.

Make some arrangements. If you are someone giving financial support to your family, it might somehow prevent you from achieving your own goal. I know it’s part of our culture to give back to our family, especially our parents. However, we also have to think about ourselves sometimes. What I did was, I told them that I can only give them this specific amount of money. Let’s say 5,000 a month.

Know the right definition of needs and wants.  It might sound easy but it’s not. Needs is something you can’t survive without it. Wants is something can live without. Though the definition is subjective to a person. Traveling is a want for me but it is a need for travel vloggers since it is their job.

Make your money work for you. As I mentioned above, I start investing in the stock market which is one of the ways to earn a passive income. Through this, it reduces the time that you have to work for money. There’s a lot of different investment nowadays, UITS, mutual funds, stock market, VUL, and forex.

Increase your psychological wallet. If you think 100,000 pesos is a big amount, you will never have this money. You’ll earn it probably but you will easily lose it. Imagine those lotto winners, most of them end up being poor because their mind can’t handle having that huge amount of money.

Earning 100,000 is not really difficult as long as you follow all these strategies I stated. There’s also a lot of strategies that you can learn online. What’s really difficult is keeping this money with all the temptations of spending.

It’s easy to think that there are people who are destined to be successful. People who are rich because they are intelligent, they have a good network, they are good looking or their family is wealthy.

What we don’t know is that the key to achieving anything we want lies within us. Every single thing we do everyday matters. Forming good habits is vital to achieving success in life.

I stumble upon a book by Stephen Covey “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. I know that it can also be applied to how we handle our finances.

When we think of habits, it means repetition but it will not be successful until we consider these three things to form a habit.

John: I am living paycheck to paycheck and it’s very stressful going to a job I don’t like but I have to because I don’t want my family to starve. Saving and investing money is the only way.

Peter: My friend taught me before what’s the best strategy in saving money and what’s the best investment tool based on my risk appetite. I won’t be having any issue learning all these skills since he promised he will teach me everything he knows.

Luke: I know why I need to save and invest and how it will help me in the future but I want to enjoy my life too. I think I am taking away the happiness I deserve.

John has the KNOWLEDGE, Peter knows someone who can teach him the SKILL and Luke knows what he needs to do but doesn’t have the DESIRE to do it.

I know most of us to have one or two of these but we all need these three in order to create a habit. Once we incorporate all of these in our habit then our next step is to do this every single day until the habit transferred to our subconscious mind.

According to Dr. Maltz, it takes 21 days to form a habit based on his observation on his patients. On the other hand, Dr. Maltz did his research and observed that it takes 66 days to form a habit. The truth is forming a new habit depends on the complexity of the habit you want to form. The longer, the better.

Four years ago, I was sitting inside our company’s cafeteria located in the Philippine Stock Exchange and I was wondering what is this for until I watched the movie “The Wolf of Wall Street”. What comes to my mind at that time is that I need to have at least a million peso and I need to be someone with a Finance or Business degree to invest in the stock market.

I have no one to ask that time so I did a simple research. I got into a blog of Omeng Tawid and he did explain stock market in layman’s term. I learned that the stock market is like inflation, it goes up over time, there are times that it goes down. If you bought a candy 10 years ago for 25 centavos and sell it now for 1 peso then you earn 300% profit. I even encourage my friends to invest and I got few hesitations and summarize these into three:

I am poor, I can’t invest. Then you have more reason to invest in the stock market. If 5,000 pesos is a large amount for you then maybe 1,000 pesos will not be a pain in the butt. Recently, stock brokerage firms lower their starting capital from 5,000 pesos to 1,000. It will still depend on what online brokers you will use.

COPY CODE SNIPPET

I am a good person, I don’t gamble. I know you are a good person, no question with that but in the stock market is not gambling. By investing in the stock market, you became a shareholder of a legitimate company. If you think it’s gambling and you have a full-time job then you are probably gambling also. You are investing your time with them but there is no guarantee that the company will stay for a long time. The stock market is for everyone who thinks that the market is not gambling.

I am not a risk taker. The stock market is not only for those people who buy and sell stocks within the day or within a short period of time (traders). You can also invest in the stock market long term as companies have potential growth in the long run (investors). The stock market is for everyone but some strategies are not.

Is the stock market for everyone? Yes, it for everyone who thinks they deserve a better life. For everyone who thinks that every Filipino deserves to achieve financial freedom.

You probably heard VUL before, especially from financial advisors of insurance companies. This is the most popular insurance policy since it has a unique benefit which is its investment component.

Variable Universal Life (VUL) is permanent life insurance where premiums (payment) you made will be used to pay for mortality and administrative cost and the remaining amount will be invested for potential growth.

It is variable since the investment performance varies on the market movement based on the type of funds you choose.

There are different fund allocation that you can choose from like bonds, money market, equity, index, and others.

ADVANTAGE OF VUL

Diversification is one of the strategies used by investors to reduce the effect of the volatility of the market. If you have stocks, mutual funds, crowdfunding, and business then VUL can be added to your asset portfolio and can give you protection.

The investment portion can be withdrawn. We all have plans and dreams that require a huge amount of money including kids education, dream house, and retirement. It will definitely cause us a lot of headaches getting a huge amount of money by the time comes. Getting a portion of our income and transferring it on a VUL as early as possible can help us achieve that goal easily.

Money works for us. We spend 8 hours of work and paid based on hours or days depending on the company. If we only have more than 24 hours a day, then we can work more than that. Working smart is now a trend, letting money works for you through investment can help you reduce time working for someone else.

DISADVANTAGE OF VUL

No one can predict what might happen with the economy, the same as the investment it may fluctuate anytime. Getting a VUL policy for 5 or 10 years paying period does not guarantee that you will only pay during that time. If your investment fund is not enough anymore to pay for the insurance then you are required to pay again to make sure your insurance is still in force.

Letting your money invested in VUL for a long period of time or not withdrawing funds can reduce the risk of lapsing. In that way, you can achieve a happy retirement or can transfer a huge amount of wealth to your family.

5/5
